In India we have category of monks called “Avdhootas” . They are pretend to be mad and don’t follow social norms. They behave like this so that people leave them alone. Often miraculous healing have been reported from such monks.

The word "pronunciation" is NOT spelled "pronOUnciation;" the vowel sound changes from "pronounce" to reflect the spelling difference. One of you got it right and the other blew it. Now, back to the fun. I truly enjoyed your analysis of how well these people spoke Mandarin and your sense of humor when they mangled the language. As to tones and listening comprehension. A friend of mine taught English in Taiwan. When he and another Usonian wanted to say something private within earshot of their students they could speak neither Mandarin nor English. So they spoke Mandarin with an accent from the Southeast USA and that made their speech totally incomprehensible to their students.

Mandarin is a very tonal language. If the wrong tone is used, it can completely mean something different.
